In January we meet with sculptor, illustrator and author Tony Angell to talk about a commissioned sculpture memorial to Eleanor Stopps, instrumental in saving Protection Island from development. Her prolonged effort resulted in federal protection of the entire island, one of the largest and most important seabird rookeries in the Pacific Northwest. Here’s a link to Tony’s work:

Stephen Yates “Water, Sticks, Leaves” at The Cannery. September Exhibit Hours: M-F 11:30-5:30, S-S until 6.

The Port Townsend School of Maritime Art is proud to sponsor Stephen Yates solo exhibit “Water, Sticks, Leaves” at The Cannery, on the Quincy Street waterfront next to the old ferry dock, Sept. 1-23.

Yates, who has pursued his art career as a Port Townsend resident for 32 years, has been collected by Microsoft, University of Washington, The Van Andel Institute, Lexus, Kipton Financial Collection in New York, and commissioned by numerous hotels, spas, corporate offices, health care facilities, schools and colleges throughout the country.

Abstracted views of the natural world, especially water and plant forms can be found in most pieces. Gestural brushwork and many small brushstrokes are combined with fluid, uncontrolled passages and bold color to suggest energy and movement. The scale shifts dramatically from small, one-foot-square pieces to a 5×12 foot triptych.

Jake Seniuk, recently retired director of The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, describes Yates work this way:

“The impulse towards gesture wrestles with the eye’s powers of observation in the canvases of Stephen Yates. Yates has long plumbed layered spaces, floating expressive doodles and geehaws freely over feathery backdrops in which soft images of shoreline and underwater gardens are dissolved. His playful games of free-association give these internal landscapes a sense of existing in elastic time. Yates’s canvases are charged fields where matter and energy are in a state of constant flux, moving from one state to the other.”
